Westwood Explorers

More independence, bigger adventures and new experiences.

Westwood Explorer Scout Unit gives young people aged 14 to 18 the opportunity to continue their Scouting journey, meet new people and take on bigger challenges.

Based in Cherry Burton, Westwood brings together young people from across the local area for a varied programme of activities, adventures and experiences.

Explorers is about giving young people more freedom. You\’ll have a real say in what you do, opportunities to take the lead and the chance to challenge yourself while having plenty of fun along the way.

Who Are Explorers?

Explorer Scouts are for young people aged 14 to 18.

It\’s the next step after Scouts, but you don\’t need any previous Scouting experience to get involved.

Explorers gives you greater independence and more opportunities to shape your own experience. You\’ll make decisions, take on challenges and develop skills that can help you at school, college, work and beyond.

Most importantly, it\’s somewhere to meet people, have fun and experience things you might never otherwise get the chance to do.

What We Get Up To

At Westwood, our Explorers help shape the programme.

That means activities are based around what young people actually want to experience and achieve.

Our programme can include outdoor adventures, navigation, cooking, team challenges, practical skills, community projects, social activities and opportunities to try something completely new.

Some activities will challenge you, some will teach you something useful and others will simply be a chance to have a brilliant time with friends.

Bigger Adventures

Being an Explorer means there are even more opportunities to get out and experience adventure.

Throughout the year, there can be opportunities for camps, expeditions, activity weekends, trips and larger Scouting events.

You\’ll also have opportunities to work towards badges, Challenge Awards and Top Awards, setting your own goals and challenging yourself to achieve them.

Explorers can take you beyond your usual surroundings and give you experiences and memories that stay with you long after the adventure finishes.

Skills for Life

The experiences you have at Explorers can help prepare you for whatever comes next.

By planning activities, working as a team and taking on challenges, you\’ll develop skills including leadership, communication, teamwork, problem solving and independence.

Explorers can also take part in the Explorer Scout Young Leaders\’ Scheme, giving you the opportunity to volunteer with younger Scout sections and develop valuable leadership experience.

Our Volunteer Team

Westwood is supported by a team of volunteers who help make our activities and adventures possible.

Their role is to support Explorers to turn ideas into reality, share their skills and help everyone get the most from their time in the Unit.

There are lots of ways to volunteer with Explorers, and you don\’t need to have been involved in Scouts before.
